About
the Simla Branch Library The Simla Library began with a group of local citizens (mainly mothers) who donated
a collection of nearly 500 items that were stored in the home of a volunteer's
basement. Volunteers took turns running the library a few hours a week and
held story times. In March of 1978, the library moved to the basement of
the Simla Municipal Building at 325 Pueblo Street, also known as the old
jail cell. Elbert County then applied for and received a State Equalization
Grant and a Special Project Grant, which were used to develop the library.
These grants purchased the shelves (some of which are still used today),
a desk, cabinets, and other materials. The library functioned well for 25
years until the collection, programs, and visitors out grew the space. The
District's 2000 campaign urged citizens to help the Simla Library "break
out of jail!". In December 2002, the library moved a few streets over
from the old location into a larger facility at 504 Washington Avenue. The
event was celebrated with a well-attended Grand Opening in January 2003.
In 2007 Double El Conservation District put an addition on the building
almost doubling the size of the library. |
