About the Kiowa Branch Library
Kiowa's library building, once St. Ann's Mission Catholic Church, was built in 1903. The stone is said to have been quarried south of Kiowa and brought to the site by mule team. In the late 1960's, the Archdiocese of Denver decided to dissolve many of the country parishes, St. Ann's being one of them. The building was turned over to the county to be used for a needed community project and the county officials designated it as a library. The library, which had been located in the basement of the courthouse since the 1930's, moved into the church building in 1970. In 2004-2005 the building received a State historical designation and two Colorado State Historic Fund grants to do a structural assessment and renovation.
