About
the Elizabeth Branch Library The first library in Elizabeth was started in 1896 by a woman's group called the Geode Library Club. The first library was open one half day per week and started with a collection of 500 books. The library eventually closed in the 1950's due to lack of use. In the early 1970's a group of citizens started a library in a garage belonging to the Stinnettes, who were group members. Money was raised through auctions and fundraising drives. The library grew steadily and moved to several different rental locations in town, including the present Town Hall. The library eventually became part of the Elbert County Library system and in 1989 the current building on Main Street was purchased for the library. The building was then remodeled with an LSCA grant and matching funds raised by the the community.
